About the Artist
Kala Bai Shyam is a Gond artist from Patangarh, Madhya Pradesh, and is recognized as one of the first women from the Pardhan Gond community to adopt contemporary materials such as canvas, brushes, and acrylic paints. Her work draws deeply from memory, particularly her childhood in Amarkantak, where encounters with wildlife left a lasting impression. Tigers, which frequently appear in her paintings, are especially significant to her, recalling the many moods in which she observed them in the forests around her home. Alongside tigers, her imagery often includes deer, birds, and trees, rendered through the intricate, rhythmic patterning characteristic of Gond art, reflecting a close and intuitive relationship with the natural world. Her artistic journey evolved from early experiences of drawing on walls to working with institutional support at places like Bharat Bhavan, where she was first introduced to paper and paints—though she initially preferred mural-like expression. Married to artist Anand Singh Shyam, she remained connected to a wider network of Gond practitioners, including Jangarh Singh Shyam, whose presence marked her early years. Over time, her work gained wider visibility, including collaborative and public projects such as illustrating cultural narratives and contributing to significant state events, where she and her husband presented works to figures like A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. Through workshops, travels, and intergenerational transmission within her own family, Kala Bai Shyam has contributed to sustaining and expanding the scope of Gond painting in a contemporary context.
