About the Artist

Ambika Dhurandhar (1912–2009) was an Indian painter associated with the academic realist tradition of the Sir J. J. School of Art, where she was among the first women to complete the Government Diploma in Painting in 1931. Born in Mumbai to the noted artist M. V. Dhurandhar, she trained under his guidance, and her practice remained closely aligned with the “Bombay School” style that shaped early 20th-century Indian art. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1939, marking early international recognition of her work. Dhurandhar’s paintings often explored mythological, historical, and figurative subjects, demonstrating a strong command of composition and draftsmanship. She exhibited widely across India and received awards from institutions such as the Bombay Art Society. Following her father’s death in 1944, she played an important role in preserving his legacy and went on to establish the Dhurandhar Kalamandir in 1949 as a teaching space.
